Ancien psychologue et potier, Jef Condon nous parle de son travail

Je travaille sur une série de tableaux en même temps et je commence sans point final en tête, ce qui permet à chaque tableau de développer sa propre histoire. Travailler sur des toiles donne une résistance aux marques dessinées apportant la liberté de mon travail de carnet de croquis.

Au fur et à mesure que les couches se forment, cette base plus dure me permet de poncer et de gratter pour révéler les couleurs précédentes, ce qui garde un sentiment de surprise et de spontanéité dans la peinture finie. Au début, je peins de manière intuitive, en ajustant la composition et en choisissant des couleurs vives et contrastées. Il y aura un moment où la peinture commence à faire des suggestions et je dois saisir » les indices qu’elle me donne.

Vers la fin, le rythme ralentit et les couleurs s’affinent, mais je suis conscient de continuer à prendre des risques audacieux jusqu’à la fin pour que la peinture garde cette sensation d’énergie. Il est essentiel d’équilibrer la liberté précoce avec une approche sensible et analytique pour guider la peinture vers une résolution. »

Former psychologist and potter, Jef Condon talks about his work:

« I work on a series of paintings at the same time and start without an end point in mind, allowing each painting to develop its own story. Working on canvas gives a resistance to the drawn marks bringing the freedom of my sketchbook work.

As the layers form, this harder base allows me to sand and scrape to reveal previous colors, keeping a sense of surprise and spontaneity in the finished painting. At first, I paint intuitively, adjusting the composition and choosing bright, contrasting colors. There will come a time when the paint starts to make suggestions, and I have to « catch » the clues it gives me.

Towards the end, the pace slows and the colors become more refined, but I’m conscious of continuing to take bold risks right to the end so that the painting retains that sense of energy. It’s essential to balance early freedom with a sensitive, analytical approach to guide the painting towards resolution. »

« Ich arbeite an einer Reihe von Bildern gleichzeitig und beginne ohne einen Endpunkt im Kopf, so dass jedes Bild seine eigene Geschichte entwickeln kann. Das Arbeiten auf Leinwand verleiht den gezeichneten Markierungen einen Widerstand, der die Freiheit meiner Skizzenbucharbeit mit sich bringt.

Während sich die Schichten bilden, ermöglicht mir diese härtere Basis, zu schleifen und zu kratzen, um die vorherigen Farben zu enthüllen, was ein Gefühl der Überraschung und Spontaneität im fertigen Bild bewahrt. Zu Beginn male ich intuitiv, indem ich die Komposition anpasse und helle, kontrastreiche Farben wähle. Es wird einen Moment geben, in dem das Gemälde beginnt, Andeutungen zu machen, und ich muss die Hinweise, die es mir gibt, « aufgreifen ».

Zum Ende hin verlangsamt sich das Tempo und die Farben werden feiner, aber ich bin mir bewusst, dass ich bis zum Schluss weiterhin gewagte Risiken eingehen muss, damit das Gemälde dieses Gefühl von Energie behält. Es ist entscheidend, die frühe Freiheit mit einem sensiblen und analytischen Ansatz auszubalancieren, um das Gemälde zu einer Auflösung zu führen. »

« Lavoro a una serie di dipinti contemporaneamente e inizio senza avere in mente un punto di arrivo, il che permette a ogni dipinto di sviluppare la propria storia. Lavorare su tela conferisce resistenza ai segni disegnati, portando la libertà del mio lavoro sugli schizzi.

Man mano che si formano gli strati, questa base più dura mi permette di carteggiare e raschiare per rivelare i colori precedenti, mantenendo un senso di sorpresa e spontaneità nel dipinto finito. All’inizio dipingo in modo intuitivo, regolando la composizione e scegliendo colori brillanti e contrastanti. Arriva il momento in cui la pittura inizia a dare suggerimenti e io devo « cogliere » gli indizi che mi dà.

Verso la fine, il ritmo rallenta e i colori diventano più raffinati, ma sono consapevole di continuare a correre rischi audaci fino alla fine, in modo che il dipinto mantenga quel senso di energia. È essenziale bilanciare la libertà iniziale con un approccio sensibile e analitico per guidare il dipinto verso la risoluzione »

« Trabajo en una serie de cuadros al mismo tiempo y empiezo sin un punto final en mente, lo que permite que cada cuadro desarrolle su propia historia. Trabajar sobre lienzo da resistencia a las marcas dibujadas, aportando la libertad de mi trabajo en cuaderno de bocetos.

A medida que se forman las capas, esta base más dura me permite lijar y raspar para revelar los colores anteriores, manteniendo una sensación de sorpresa y espontaneidad en el cuadro acabado. Al principio, pinto intuitivamente, ajustando la composición y eligiendo colores brillantes y contrastados. Hacia el final, el ritmo se ralentiza y los colores se vuelven más refinados, pero soy consciente de que debo seguir arriesgándome hasta el final para que el cuadro conserve esa sensación de energía. Es esencial equilibrar la libertad temprana con un enfoque sensible y analítico para guiar el cuadro hacia la resolución »

« Ik werk aan een serie schilderijen tegelijk en begin zonder een eindpunt voor ogen, waardoor elk schilderij zijn eigen verhaal kan ontwikkelen. Het werken op doek geeft weerstand aan de getekende tekens en brengt de vrijheid van mijn schetsboekwerk.

Naarmate de lagen zich vormen, stelt deze hardere basis me in staat om te schuren en te schrapen om de voorgaande kleuren te onthullen, waardoor een gevoel van verrassing en spontaniteit in het voltooide schilderij blijft. In het begin schilder ik intuïtief, pas ik de compositie aan en kies ik heldere, contrasterende kleuren. Er komt een moment dat de verf suggesties begint te geven en ik de aanwijzingen die het me geeft moet ‘vangen’.

Tegen het einde vertraagt het tempo en worden de kleuren verfijnder, maar ik ben me ervan bewust dat ik tot het einde toe gedurfde risico’s blijf nemen, zodat het schilderij dat gevoel van energie behoudt. Het is essentieel om de vroege vrijheid in evenwicht te brengen met een gevoelige, analytische benadering om het schilderij naar een oplossing te leiden. »
