Les Lumières, mouvement phare du XVIIIe siècle, ont porté haut les idéaux de liberté, de raison de progrès et d’émancipation face à l’obscurantisme. Pourtant, aujourd’hui, ce courant de pensée est parfois accusé de masquer des dérives tragiques ; notamment le colonialisme, l’esclavage et l’impérialisme, qui ont marqué l’histoire de l’Occident. Que reste-t-il de ces idéaux face aux critiques ? Les Lumières peuvent-elles encore nourrir nos réflexions en ces temps incertains ?

The Enlightenment, the leading movement of the 18th century, held high the ideals of freedom, reason, progress and emancipation in the face of obscurantism. Today, however, this current of thought is sometimes accused of masking the tragic excesses of colonialism, slavery and imperialism that have marked the history of the West. What remains of these ideals in the face of criticism? Can the Enlightenment still provide food for thought in these uncertain times?

Die Aufklärung, eine der wichtigsten Bewegungen des 18. Jahrhunderts, hat die Ideale der Freiheit, der Vernunft, des Fortschritts und der Emanzipation gegen den Obskurantismus hochgehalten. Heute wird diese Denkrichtung jedoch manchmal beschuldigt, tragische Fehlentwicklungen zu verschleiern, insbesondere den Kolonialismus, die Sklaverei und den Imperialismus, die die Geschichte des Westens geprägt haben. Was bleibt von diesen Idealen angesichts der Kritik? Kann die Aufklärung uns in diesen unsicheren Zeiten noch zum Nachdenken anregen?

Toch wordt deze stroming er vandaag de dag soms van beschuldigd dat ze tragische excessen verhult, zoals kolonialisme, slavernij en imperialisme, die de geschiedenis van het Westen hebben getekend. Wat blijft er over van deze idealen in het licht van de kritiek? Kan de Verlichting nog steeds stof tot nadenken bieden in deze onzekere tijden?
