L’année 2025 marque le 100e anniversaire de la naissance d’Oscar Peterson surnommé le maharadjah du clavier » par Duke Ellington.
Par quatre fois, ce légendaire pianiste et compositeur d’origine canadienne est venu embraser le chapiteau de Marciac. Il est inutile de rappeler que ce géant du piano reste universellement tenu pour l’un des prestigieux virtuoses que le jazz ait connus.
Héritier de la grande tradition pianistique qui va du stride à Art Tatum, il a su intégrer des éléments harmoniques plus modernes sans pour autant abandonner le swing qui demeura jusqu’au bout la caractéristique essentielle de son jeu. Son sens de l’improvisation servi par une technique phénoménale, alliant puissance et légèreté, lui permettait de se lancer dans des cavalcades éblouissantes, parfaitement structurées et dominées faisant de lui l’un des plus grands pianistes de l’histoire du jazz.
L’héritage de Peterson se perpétue avec sa musique enseignée dans les écoles du monde entier. En 2025, nous célébreront ce qui aurait été son 100e anniversaire avec « The Oscar Peterson Centennial Celebration » qui s’enrichit de la contribution d’artistes qui se sont inspirés de sa musique dont Sullivan Fortner, John Clayton et Jeff Hamilton, les trois grands musiciens qui se produiront à Marciac en son hommage.

L’une des dernières légendes vivantes du jazz. On va donc l’écouter comme d’autres vont poser leurs lèvres sur l’anneau papal. Mais ce qui pourrait ressembler à une messe attentive se transforme petit à petit en célébration de titres mythiques les attendus Cantaloupe Island, Watermelon Man, Maiden Voyage ou le toujours mystérieux Footprints de Wayne Shorter.
Il faut attendre ses tubes Chameleon ou Rockit pour voir ce grand créateur du jazz moderne mettre son clavier-guitare en bandoulière et attaquer les lignes de basse qui tuent ».

À ses côtés, un groupe de fortes personnalités, terriblement efficace avec cette note exotique, totalement originale, que le guitariste franco-béninois Lionel Loueke apporte au son d’ensemble, plongé dans ses songes d’Afrique et dans le bain fusionnel de la scène contemporaine.

The year 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Oscar Peterson, dubbed the « maharajah of the keyboard » by Duke Ellington.
On four occasions, this legendary Canadian-born pianist and composer has set the Marciac marquee alight. Needless to say, this piano giant is universally regarded as one of the most prestigious virtuosos jazz has ever known.
Heir to the great pianistic tradition that stretches from stride to Art Tatum, he was able to integrate more modern harmonic elements without abandoning the swing that remained the essential characteristic of his playing right up to the end. His sense of improvisation, supported by a phenomenal technique combining power and lightness, enabled him to launch into dazzling cavalcades, perfectly structured and dominated, making him one of the greatest pianists in the history of jazz.
Peterson?s legacy lives on, with his music taught in schools the world over. In 2025, we will celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday with « The Oscar Peterson Centennial Celebration », enriched by the contributions of artists who were inspired by his music, including Sullivan Fortner, John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton, the three great musicians who will perform in Marciac in his honor.

Im Jahr 2025 jährt sich zum 100. Mal der Geburtstag von Oscar Peterson, der von Duke Ellington als « Maharadscha des Keyboards » bezeichnet wurde.
Viermal hat der legendäre Pianist und Komponist kanadischer Abstammung das Festzelt in Marciac zum Glühen gebracht. Es ist überflüssig, daran zu erinnern, dass dieser Klaviergigant weltweit als einer der größten Virtuosen gilt, die der Jazz je hervorgebracht hat.
Als Erbe der großen Klaviertradition, die vom Stride bis zu Art Tatum reicht, verstand er es, modernere harmonische Elemente zu integrieren, ohne dabei den Swing aufzugeben, der bis zum Schluss das wesentliche Merkmal seines Spiels blieb. Sein Sinn für Improvisation, der von einer phänomenalen Technik unterstützt wurde, die Kraft und Leichtigkeit miteinander verband, ermöglichte es ihm, blendende, perfekt strukturierte und beherrschte Kavalkaden zu starten, die ihn zu einem der größten Pianisten der Jazzgeschichte machten.
Petersons Vermächtnis lebt weiter, indem seine Musik in Schulen auf der ganzen Welt gelehrt wird. Geburtstag mit der « Oscar Peterson Centennial Celebration » feiern, die durch die Beiträge von Künstlern bereichert wird, die sich von seiner Musik inspirieren ließen, darunter Sullivan Fortner, John Clayton und Jeff Hamilton, die drei großen Musiker, die in Marciac zu seinen Ehren auftreten werden.

Doch was wie eine aufmerksame Messe aussehen könnte, verwandelt sich allmählich in eine Feier legendärer Titel: die erwarteten Cantaloupe Island, Watermelon Man, Maiden Voyage oder das immer noch geheimnisvolle Footprints von Wayne Shorter.
Erst bei seinen Hits Chameleon oder Rockit sieht man, wie dieser große Schöpfer des modernen Jazz sein Keyboard und seine Gitarre umhängt und die « Killer-Basslinien » angreift.

An seiner Seite eine Band mit starken Persönlichkeiten, die mit der exotischen, völlig originellen Note, die der französisch-beninische Gitarrist Lionel Loueke dem Gesamtsound verleiht, furchtbar effektiv ist, eingetaucht in seine Träume von Afrika und in das Schmelzbad der modernen Szene.

Erede della grande tradizione pianistica che va dallo stride ad Art Tatum, ha saputo integrare elementi armonici più moderni senza abbandonare lo swing che è rimasto la caratteristica essenziale del suo modo di suonare fino alla fine. Il suo senso dell’improvvisazione, supportato da una tecnica fenomenale che combina potenza e leggerezza, gli ha permesso di lanciarsi in cavalcate folgoranti, perfettamente strutturate e controllate, rendendolo uno dei più grandi pianisti della storia del jazz.
L’eredità di Peterson continua a vivere, con la sua musica insegnata nelle scuole di tutto il mondo. Abbiamo dovuto aspettare i suoi successi Chameleon e Rockit per vedere questo grande creatore del jazz moderno imbracciare la sua chitarra-tastiera e attaccare le linee di basso « killer ».

Accanto a lui, un gruppo di forte personalità, terribilmente efficace con quella nota esotica del tutto originale che il chitarrista franco-beninese Lionel Loueke aggiunge al suono complessivo, immerso nei suoi sogni africani e nella fusione della scena contemporanea.

En cuatro ocasiones, este legendario pianista y compositor de origen canadiense ha hecho arder la carpa del Marciac. Ni que decir tiene que este gigante del piano es considerado universalmente como uno de los virtuosos más prestigiosos que ha conocido el jazz.
Heredero de la gran tradición pianística que va del stride a Art Tatum, supo integrar elementos armónicos más modernos sin abandonar el swing que siguió siendo la característica esencial de su forma de tocar hasta el final. Su sentido de la improvisación, apoyado en una técnica fenomenal que combinaba potencia y ligereza, le permitía lanzarse a cabalgatas deslumbrantes, perfectamente estructuradas y controladas, lo que le convirtió en uno de los más grandes pianistas de la historia del jazz.
El legado de Peterson sigue vivo, y su música se enseña en escuelas de todo el mundo. En 2025, celebraremos su centenario con « La Celebración del Centenario de Oscar Peterson », enriquecida por las contribuciones de artistas que se inspiraron en su música, como Sullivan Fortner, John Clayton y Jeff Hamilton, los tres grandes músicos que actuarán en Marciac en su honor.

Hubo que esperar a sus éxitos Chameleon y Rockit para ver a este gran creador del jazz moderno enfundarse su teclado-guitarra y atacar las líneas de bajo « asesinas ».

Deze in Canada geboren legendarische pianist en componist heeft al vier keer de feesttent van Marciac in vuur en vlam gezet. Onnodig te zeggen dat deze reus van de piano universeel wordt beschouwd als een van de meest prestigieuze virtuozen die de jazz ooit heeft gekend.
Als erfgenaam van de grote pianotraditie die zich uitstrekt van stride tot Art Tatum, was hij in staat om modernere harmonische elementen te integreren zonder de swing op te geven die tot het einde toe het essentiële kenmerk van zijn spel bleef. Zijn gevoel voor improvisatie, ondersteund door een fenomenale techniek die kracht en lichtheid combineert, stelde hem in staat om duizelingwekkende cavalcades te starten, perfect gestructureerd en gecontroleerd, waardoor hij een van de grootste pianisten in de geschiedenis van de jazz werd.
De nalatenschap van Peterson leeft voort en zijn muziek wordt op scholen over de hele wereld onderwezen.
