Le terme bildstock se traduit par image (bild) et bâton (stock), signifie un fût qui porte une image. Assimilé à un calvaire, le bildstock est un monument religieux en bois ou en pierre érigé soit dans les rues soit dans les villages. En général, Il est couronné d’une niche dans laquelle se trouve l’image du Christ en croix ou bien d’un autre saint, le tout protégé par un auvent. Tous les bildstocks sont différents de par leur forme, leur signification et leur structure. Tantôt ils reposent sur un autel, tantôt apparaissent des éléments de la vie quotidienne. Pourquoi voit-on beaucoup de bildstock dans nos villages ? Au 17ème siècle, la guerre de Trente Ans a fait beaucoup de
ravages sur ces monuments religieux sauf autour de Thionville. En effet, la région thionvilloise, n’ayant jamais appartenue aux ducs de Lorraine mais resta luxembourgeoise jusqu’au milieu du 17ème siècle où la guerre ne fut que passagère, a conservé un grand nombre de bildstocks.
