Nahash Urban Brass Unit

NUBU est un groupe collectif, un quintet à l’instrumentation hors du commun dont les membres viennent d’horizons variés. Entre jazz, folk songs et improvisation, NUBU invente son propre folklore, une musique intemporelle autant que contemporaine. Le groupe fait se rencontrer avec malice des instruments d’époques différentes le serpent (Elisabeth Coxall), ancêtre européen du tuba ayant longtemps accompagné le chœur dans les églises, le flugabone (Victor Auffray), conçu plus récemment pour sa praticité au sein des marching band, le trombone (Thibaut Du Cheyron) au mécanisme quasi inchangé depuis son invention, les percussions à peaux animales telles que le tambour chamanique et le tambour sur cadre (Guillaume Lys), la contrebasse (Marion Ruault) dont le bois fait écho à celui du serpent.

L’absence d’instrument harmonique et d’instrument aigu pourrait représenter une contrainte ; NUBU (Nahash Urban Brass Unit) en fait son terrain de jeu pour explorer le mariage des timbres des trois soufflants et pour ajouter les voix humaines. Avec NUBU, les voix forment une matière à part entière, élastique, rebondissante, nourrie de scansion, de yodel, de cris. Elisabeth Coxall, au chant lead, dispose d’un formidable espace de liberté pour ouvrir le spectre vers les aigus. Inspiré par la folk anglo-saxonne et les chansons de la Renaissance, le groupe renoue le fil d’une tradition orale et twiste » le tout par ses improvisations explosives, puissamment énergisantes. En se jouant avec gourmandise des époques, NUBU offre au serpent à la charge mystique qu’il suggère et à son timbre tombé dans l’oubli une place inattendue dans un présent ébouriffant.

NUBU is a collective group, a quintet of unusual instrumentation whose members come from a variety of backgrounds. Between jazz, folk songs and improvisation, NUBU invents its own folklore, a music as timeless as it is contemporary. Elisabeth Coxall, on lead vocals, has a tremendous amount of freedom to open up the spectrum towards the high notes. Inspired by Anglo-Saxon folk and Renaissance songs, the group revives the thread of an oral tradition and « twists » the whole with explosive, powerfully energizing improvisations. NUBU?s playfulness with the times gives the snake with the mystical charge it suggests and its forgotten timbre an unexpected place in a dazzling present.

NUBU ist eine kollektive Band, ein Quintett mit außergewöhnlicher Instrumentierung, dessen Mitglieder aus verschiedenen Bereichen stammen. Zwischen Jazz, Folksongs und Improvisation erfindet NUBU seine eigene Folklore, eine zeitlose und zeitgenössische Musik. Die Band lässt Instrumente aus verschiedenen Epochen aufeinandertreffen: die Schlange (Elisabeth Coxall), ein europäischer Vorfahre der Tuba, die lange Zeit den Chor in Kirchen begleitetedie Posaune (Thibaut Du Cheyron) mit ihrem seit ihrer Erfindung fast unveränderten Mechanismus, Schlaginstrumente mit Tierhäuten wie die Schamanentrommel und die Rahmentrommel (Guillaume Lys) und der Kontrabass (Marion Ruault), dessen Holz dem der Schlange nachempfunden ist.

NUBU is een collectieve groep, een kwintet met ongebruikelijke instrumentatie waarvan de leden uit verschillende achtergronden komen. Ergens tussen jazz, volksliederen en improvisatie creëert NUBU zijn eigen folklore, een muziek die even tijdloos als eigentijds is.
