Les grottes de Gargas ont ouvert leurs portes au tourisme au tout début du 19ème siècle avec le développement du thermalisme dans les Pyrénées centrales. En ce temps là, les peintures préhistoriques ne sont pas encore connues et ce sont des fermiers locaux qui font découvrir la grotte aux touristes à grand renfort de feux de paille ou de bengale.

Nous vous proposons de revivre (à la lueur de torches électriques) cette époque. Le guide décrira les concrétions aux formes incroyables et les légendes (inexactes?) de monstres anthropophages vivant dans la grotte.

The Gargas caves opened their doors to tourism at the very beginning of the 19th century, with the development of spa tourism in the central Pyrenees. In those days, prehistoric paintings were not yet known, and it was local farmers who introduced tourists to the caves by lighting straw or bengal fires.

We invite you to relive this era (by the light of electric torches). The guide will describe the incredible concretions and the (inaccurate?) legends of anthropophagous monsters living in the cave.

Die Höhlen von Gargas öffneten ihre Türen für den Tourismus ganz zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts mit der Entwicklung des Thermalbades in den Zentralpyrenäen. Zu dieser Zeit waren die prähistorischen Malereien noch nicht bekannt und es waren lokale Bauern, die den Touristen die Höhle mit Stroh- oder Bengalfeuern näher brachten.

Le grotte di Gargas hanno aperto le porte al turismo all’inizio del XIX secolo, con lo sviluppo del turismo termale nei Pirenei centrali. All’epoca non si conoscevano ancora le pitture preistoriche e furono i contadini locali a introdurre i turisti nelle grotte accendendo fuochi di paglia o di bengala.

Vi invitiamo a rivivere quest’epoca (alla luce di torce elettriche). La guida descriverà le concrezioni dalle forme incredibili e le leggende (inesatte?) di mostri antropofagi che vivono nella grotta.

En aquella época aún no se conocían las pinturas prehistóricas y fueron los agricultores locales quienes introdujeron a los turistas en las cuevas encendiendo hogueras de paja o bengala.

In die tijd waren de prehistorische schilderingen nog niet bekend en het waren de lokale boeren die de toeristen kennis lieten maken met de grotten door stro- of Bengaalvuren aan te steken.
