À l’invitation des Amis du Musée de Toul, l’historien beaunois Patrick Serre évoquera la fameuse figure du général Boulanger, Saint-Cyrien, héros des guerres d’Afrique et de Cochinchine sous le second Empire, devenu le plus jeune Officier Général de l’Armée française sous la IIIème République.

Ami d’enfance de Clémenceau, il devint ministre de la guerre du gouvernement Freycinet en 1886 et fut l’auteur de réformes populaires au sein de l’Armée. Son triomphe à la revue de Lomchamp le 14 juillet 1886 illustre son niveau de popularité à cette époque.
Général républicain, il plaît à la gauche, général intransigeant vis à vis de l’Allemagne du Kaiser, il plaît à la droite patriote et nationaliste. Incarnation de la Revanche , son éviction en 1887 du gouvernement et sa radiation de l’Armée en 1888 fera naître l’éphémère mouvement politique connu sous le nom de Boulangisme qui fera trembler la République de 1888 à 1889. La fin tragique sur fond de la grande passion amoureuse de sa vie clôturera une destinée romanesque.

%C0t the invitation of the Friends of the Toul Museum, Patrick Serre, a historian from Beaune, will discuss the famous figure of General Boulanger, a graduate of Saint-Cyr, a hero of the wars in Africa and Cochinchina during the Second Empire, who went on to become the youngest general officer in the French Army under the Third Republic.

A childhood friend of Clémenceau, he became Minister of War in the Freycinet government in 1886 and was the architect of popular reforms within the Army. His triumph at the military parade in Lomchamp on July 14, 1886, illustrates his level of popularity at that time.
A Republican general, he aligned with the left; an uncompromising general toward the Kaiser’s Germany, he aligned with the patriotic and nationalist right. As the embodiment of “Revanche,” his ouster from the government in 1887 and his dismissal from the Army in 1888 gave rise to the ephemeralpolitical movement known as Boulangism, which would shake the Republic from 1888 to 1889. His tragic end, set against the backdrop of the great love of his life, would bring a romantic destiny to a close.
